TMJ Disorder

TMJ disorder is a type of temporomandibular disorder or TMD. TMJ can cause pain in your jaw joint as well as in the muscles that control jaw movement.

The exact cause of TMJ disorder can be difficult to determine. Your pain may be due to a mix of different factors. It can be due to genetics, arthritis, or jaw injury. Some people have jaw pain because of bruxism. We’ve gotten our fair share of emails from patients looking for TMJ treatment over the years. Many of these emails describe osteoarthritis of the jaw as a result of a traumatic injury. Jaw dislocation can happen in a hockey game, for example.

You can also get dislocated or fractured jaw from an accident. Some people also claim that their TMJ problems began after they had their wisdom teeth extracted. Others will argue that TMJ developed as a degenerative joint disease.

After an examination of the patient’s head, jaw, and neck, we sometimes discover a cause-and-effect relationship that many of these patients have. This is when their neck pain and neck instability are causing and affecting the worsening of their TMJ problems. Their neck is causing pain in their jaw.

The pain these patients feel is due to soft tissue damage and weakness in the back of the skull. It can also include the cervical vertebrae facet joints, the cervical neck ligaments, and the cervical neck muscles. TMJ surgery should not be your only option. According to a study published in the Journal of oral and facial pain and headache, PRP injections may reduce pain more effectively than placebo injections in TMJ osteoarthritis. This became evident at 6 and 12 months post-injection. At 12 months post-injection, there was a significant difference in pain reduction when PRP was compared to hyaluronic acid. Although it should be interpreted with caution, PRP may have a beneficial effect on the relief of TMJ osteoarthritis pain.
