Nutrition/Obesity Lecture Part 1

Prolotherapy and Nutrition
I love playing sports at a high level of competition, so early in my career as a medical doctor I began to take up the study of non-surgical approaches to joint-related sports injuries and proper nutrition.

Like many physicians, I thought proper nutrition meant plenty of fruits and vegetables, plenty of grains and a very low fat diet. But funny things were happening to me, it seemed that I was chronically inflamed.

Never one to recommend the overuse of anti-inflammatories to my patients, I would not take them myself unless in extreme circumstance.

I began to research why my joints were always hurting and inflamed and to see if nutrition could be playing a role. I decided to experiment on my
shoulder pain.

I was playing a lot of tennis and my shoulder was hurting more and more and more without a clear indication why. I knew what overuse syndrome was and it wasn't that. I did not have a clear injury causing episode, so it had to be something else, and it was. Orange Juice.

Orange Juice causes shoulder pain?

For me it did. I was drinking orange juice several times a day, thinking how healthy it was for me, but, what I found out was that all that orange juice, and all that citric acid in it was causing my body to go into a "acidic" state, an "inflammatory causing state." When I stopped drinking orange juice, my shoulder pain went away.

Acid, Alkalinity, and Chronic Inflammation
Our bodies', like swimming pools, can have a high pH and a low pH. pH being the measure of the amount of acidity. If you go swimming you know that if the pool has a lot of chlorine (acid) in it, it is going to burn your eyes, mouth, and skin.

The same thing in your body. If you have too much acid you will have
inflammation
and things will start to hurt, especially joints.

Is This You?
Now let's say that you were a patient who came into our office for joint pain. I am sure you would say something like,

"I recently gained some weight, I have a lot of stiffness all over, and I am having back, hip and knee pain, I guess I am just breaking down and getting old."

Well you can get old, but you don't have to breakdown.

The first thing we do is give you a thorough, manual examination of your painful joints. No MRI or CT scan, but a physical examination where we manipulate and touch your joints to find the exact pain causing areas.

This allows us to determine if we can treat you with non-surgical methods first, such as Prolotherapy to rebuild weaken joints using simple injections of dextrose instead of using
cortisone
 or anti-inflammatories.

Chronic joint pain and all over inflammation is a clear indicator to us that this patient's body is in a high acidic state and they need to alkalize themselves. How?

First always organic foods, we do not want antibiotics and anti-inflammatories coming into our bodies through meats, poultries, fish or fertilizers used for produce:

• Eat dark green vegetables such as brocolli, kale, spinach, with salad at meals.

Eat lean proteins

Get lots of good fats from the omega family and from flaxseed and other oils.

Drink a lot of water

Who doesn't know the importance of water? As we age, we tend to dehydrate. The collagen, which is the protein of the body that we are made out of, when it starts to dehydrate, our ligaments dry out, our tendons get dried out (ligaments attach bones to bones, tendons attach muscle to the bones) and we get "creaky," joints.

Water is also an excellent detoxifier and brings the acidity down.

In our practice a good nutrition program goes hand in hand with our chronic pain program of non-surgical, non-pharmaceutical treatments. When seeking a permanent solution to your chronic pain, make nutrition part of your plan too.
